HOUSING NEED

If you live here, you’ve likely felt the pressure of costly real estate, harder hiring, fewer local neighbors – all because the housing supply has failed to keep up with demand.

The Waitlist

  • In Snowmass Village alone, there are 203 people on the town’s workforce housing waiting list, including 51 Aspen Skiing Company employees.
  • Housing those employees through the SHOP could take up to 36 people off the waiting list, improving other workers’ chances of securing housing through future projects like the Draw Site.

The Scale of the Need

  • Snowmass Village needs 383 workforce housing units and can’t build them all alone. These 30 employer-funded units move the community forward — while saving taxpayers over $34 million.
  • By comparison, the TOSV Draw Site is pending a final plan approval of 66 units that is projected to cost more than $75 million dollars. Together, the two projects combined make up just ~25% of the total workforce housing units needed to meet demand.

Aspen Skiing Company needs more than 300 units of stable, long-term housing to sustain its core operations, driven by an aging workforce and rising housing costs across the Valley. The SHOP is a small but critical step toward meeting that need.

The Commuting Reality

Many of the people who keep Snowmass running now commute from Glenwood Springs, Rifle, and beyond — round-trips that can range from 40 to 90+ miles per day. That means:

    • More traffic on Highway 82—and more peak-congestion trips within Snowmass Village
    • Longer days for essential workers
    • Higher emissions
    • Greater strain on regional infrastructure

Housing employees closer to where they work reduces those impacts while strengthening the year-round community.

This project won’t solve the housing shortage, but it addresses part of a clearly identified need.
